Two St. Michael’s researchers flourish in CIHR’s newest grant competition

Two St. Michael’s Hospital researchers were effective in the newest round of Canadian Institutes of Health Research Foundation Grant competition. As a whole, greater than $5.six million was awarded towards the St. Michael’s researchers through the CIHR.

CIHR Foundation Grants are made to lead to some sustainable first step toward health research leaders. These grants provide lengthy-term support for that quest for innovative, high-impact research programs.

Dr. Prabhat Jha is founding father of the Center for Global Health Research of St. Michael’s and Research Chair in Global Health insurance and Epidemiology in the College of Toronto. He received a seven-year Foundation Grant to fill large data gaps that prevent low- and middle-earnings countries from understanding reasons for dying.

“Reliable measurement of methods people die allows us to learn how to reduce premature deaths one of the living, and also to understand key risks, most particularly tobacco,” states Dr. Jha, who is another researcher using the hospital’s Li Ka Shing Understanding Institute. “This grant will let us extend our studies that already cover 120 million deaths in 11 countries.”

Dr. Sharon Straus is director from the Understanding Translation Program of St. Michael’s along with a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Understanding Translation. Her seven-year Foundation Grant will standardize the way in which Canadians find out about research breakthroughs that may improve how seniors are cared for—particularly for chronic disease management.

“By concentrating on developing sustainable solutions, we are able to make sure that these studies have a major impact within the lengthy term,” states Dr. Straus, who is another researcher using the hospital’s Li Ka Shing Understanding Institute and also the Mary Trimmer Chair in Geriatric Medicine. “Our group of clinicians, patients, caregivers, policy makers and researchers will complete research to optimize proper care of seniors on the national and worldwide scale.”
